Ceramic Sgraffito Tool DOUBLE NEEDLE & FLAME

The DOUBLE NEEDLE & FLAME sgraffito tool for pottery combines two sintered diamond tips: a fine conical needle tip and a flame-shaped tip. Two complementary geometries for creating precise lines, removing slip or underglaze, and carving grooves of different widths into clay.

Its double-ended design allows you to move quickly from fine details to broader marks. The Needle tip creates clean, precise lines, while the Flame tip removes more material and lets you vary the width of the mark depending on the angle and the area of the tip used.

Precision Sgraffito Tool for Pottery

The conical Needle tip is ideal for drawing, outlining and creating fine incisions. By adjusting the pressure and working depth, you can produce anything from light surface marks to deeper, more defined lines:

The elongated Flame tip gradually widens along its profile. Different areas of the tip can be used to create narrow or broad grooves, curves, smooth transitions and organic shapes:

Two Sintered Diamond Tips

Both ends feature sintered diamond tips, a highly wear-resistant material that maintains its effectiveness for longer.

The tips allow you to work on the clay surface with control, remove slip or underglaze and create well-defined details without constantly changing tools.

For Clay Carving, Removing Slip and Creating Varied Marks

This pottery carving tool can be used to:

  • Draw fine lines, outlines and incisions.
  • Remove slip or underglaze and reveal the clay beneath.
  • Create grooves of varying widths.
  • Carve curves and organic shapes.
  • Remove material from or clean up small areas of a design.
  • Add textures and decorative details.

The Needle & Flame combination is particularly versatile for designs that combine precise lines with broader areas or marks of varying widths.

How to Use the Sgraffito Tool on Pottery

We recommend working on leather-hard clay, when the piece still contains some moisture but is firm enough to resist deformation.

Hold the tool like a pencil and begin with light pressure. Use the Needle tip for the finest details and switch to the Flame tip when you need to widen the mark or remove more material. Before working on the final piece, test the tool on a sample to check the desired width and depth.
